A Bridge of Hope

Founded in 2026, the Fredericksburg Immigration Justice Fund (FIJF) is a Virginia nonprofit nonstock corporation and IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) public charity serving immigrants and families throughout the Greater Fredericksburg area.

We believe no family in our community should have to face an immigration crisis alone. FIJF exists to walk alongside our neighbors with practical help, compassionate support, and access to quality legal representation when the path ahead feels uncertain.

Rooted in Christian faith, our work begins with a simple conviction: every person bears inherent dignity and is worthy of being treated with compassion, respect, and love.

To be a bridge of hope for immigrants and their families by removing financial barriers to quality legal representation while providing practical resources and compassionate support that foster dignity and belonging.

A community shaped by shalom, where immigrants and their families are met with justice, mercy, and compassion; where dignity is protected, belonging is cultivated, and neighbors walk faithfully alongside one another.

FIJF ORIGIN STORY - THE UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

In early 2021, I found myself holding two babies whose mother had fled Central America with her young children, enduring horrific violence along the way. As I held her babies and heard pieces of her story, something shifted in me.

It is easy to talk about immigration in categories. It is much harder to do that when you are rocking someone’s baby to sleep.

Later that year, after the fall of Kabul, our family sat on the floor of a hotel room with a newly arrived Afghan family who had barely escaped Afghanistan. They had escaped with a few bags and an uncertain future.

And still, they fed us.
They had so little to spare, yet they shared it freely.
They gave us their tomorrow.

What began with those encounters grew into something much larger than one family. Welcome Families, English teachers, advocates, attorneys, churches, neighbors, and those fostering unaccompanied minors came alongside immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in our community. There were English classes, shared meals, appointments, paperwork, celebrations, prayers, laughter, tears, and friendships. Again and again, we learned that proximity changes things.

Then the needs changed. Husbands and fathers in families we knew were detained, leaving wives and children to navigate life without them. Families suddenly faced enormous legal bills while also losing income and struggling with rent, groceries, and everyday expenses. The community that had grown through years of friendship responded, with people giving what they could and walking alongside families through the crisis.

But the needs were becoming too great to keep passing the hat whenever someone was in crisis. Our neighbors needed something that could endure.

Fredericksburg Immigration Justice Fund was born from that need.

What Keeps Us on the Path

DIGNITY

Created in the image of God, every person possesses inherent dignity and worth. We honor that dignity in every neighbor, regardless of nationality, faith, or immigration status.

JUSTICE

Justice reflects the character of God. We reject partiality, stand with the vulnerable, and walk alongside our neighbors so that wealth, power, or status never determines whose voice matters.

COMPASSION

Christ's compassion moves us toward our neighbors. We respond with empathy, practical action, and a commitment to walk faithfully alongside those facing uncertainty and crisis.

BELONGING

God calls us to welcome the stranger and love our neighbor. We create space for people to be known, welcomed, valued, and connected to community.

INTEGRITY & STEWARDSHIP

Everything entrusted to us belongs ultimately to God. We steward every gift with integrity, wisdom, transparency, and accountability.

PROXIMITY

Love requires proximity. We draw near, listen well, share life together, and allow relationships with our neighbors to shape how we serve.

What We Do

FIJF helps immigrant families navigate moments of uncertainty and crisis by removing financial barriers to quality legal representation and connecting families with practical support and trusted community resources.

Our work includes financial assistance for immigration-related legal needs, practical support for families affected by detention or immigration proceedings, community resource guides that help neighbors find additional services, and education and advocacy that help our community better understand and respond to the experiences of immigrant families.

Meet Our Leadership

FIJF is led by a Board of Directors that brings together professional expertise, lived experience, and deep connection to the communities we serve. Our leadership includes immigrants and children of immigrants, professionals, ministry leaders, and people whose lives and work have been shaped by service across cultures and communities.

Together, we are committed to leading FIJF with Christian faith, humility, wise stewardship, and a shared calling to seek justice, love our neighbors, and honor the dignity of every person.
