Legal Services

Quality legal representation should not depend on a family’s ability to afford it.

The Fredericksburg Immigration Justice Fund provides financial assistance toward immigration legal representation and related legal expenses. Depending on the circumstances and available funding, assistance may help with:

  • Immigration attorney fees and retainers
  • Removal and deportation defense
  • Asylum and other humanitarian immigration matters
  • Immigration court representation
  • Appeals and other post-decision legal proceedings
  • Bond-related legal expenses
  • Habeas corpus representation related to immigration detention
  • Certain USCIS and immigration filing fees
  • Interpretation or translation needed for legal representation

You do not need to understand the immigration system or know exactly what kind of help you need before reaching out. If you or someone you love is struggling to afford immigration legal representation, we encourage you to contact us. We will listen, learn about the situation, and determine whether financial assistance may be available.

FIJF does not provide legal advice or legal representation. Financial assistance is based on individual circumstances, available funding, and approval, and does not guarantee the outcome of any immigration matter.

Emergency Support

An immigration crisis can affect far more than a person’s legal case.

When a loved one is detained, a family loses income, or unexpected immigration expenses arise, everyday necessities can quickly become difficult to afford. Families may suddenly find themselves choosing between legal expenses and rent, groceries, medical care, or other essential needs.

The Fredericksburg Immigration Justice Fund provides emergency financial assistance to help individuals and families remain safe and stable during an immigration-related crisis. Depending on the circumstances and available funding, assistance may help with:

  • Rent, housing, and other urgent housing expenses
  • Groceries and essential household needs
  • Medical care and necessary health-related expenses
  • Transportation related to immigration proceedings, detention, or family needs
  • Utilities and other essential bills
  • Immediate needs arising when a detained or removed family member was a primary source of income
  • Other urgent necessities that help protect a family’s safety and stability

You do not have to face an immigration crisis alone. If detention, deportation proceedings, or another immigration challenge has created an immediate financial hardship for you or your family, we encourage you to reach out. We will listen to what is happening, learn what your family needs, and determine whether assistance may be available.

Emergency assistance is based on individual circumstances, available funding, and approval. FIJF generally pays approved expenses directly to service providers or vendors rather than providing unrestricted cash assistance.

Advocacy & Education

Strong communities begin with understanding, connection, and the courage to speak up.

Immigration laws and policies can be complicated, rapidly changing, and difficult to navigate. Misinformation and fear can leave immigrants and their families feeling isolated, while neighbors who want to help may not know where to begin.

The Fredericksburg Immigration Justice Fund works to strengthen our community through education, advocacy, and connection. Our work may include:

  • Providing practical, accessible information to help individuals and families navigate everyday needs and challenges
  • Connecting individuals and families with trusted legal, educational, health, housing, food, and other community resources
  • Sharing reliable, accessible information about immigration issues, rights, and available resources
  • Helping people understand where to turn when immigration concerns arise
  • Educating churches, organizations, and community members about the realities facing immigrant families
  • Raising awareness about policies and practices that affect our immigrant neighbors
  • Advocating alongside individuals and families navigating the immigration system
  • Helping amplify the experiences and concerns of people whose voices are too often overlooked

We believe advocacy should begin by listening. Our goal is not simply to speak about immigrant communities, but to stand alongside our neighbors, help connect them with the information and resources they need, and create a more informed and compassionate Greater Fredericksburg community.

FIJF’s advocacy and educational work is nonpartisan and focused on immigration issues that affect the individuals and families we serve.
